As part of Pride Amsterdam 2025 and the Pride Art Route, Gallery MAI Amsterdam presents Fetish Embroidery / WALLPAPERS 18+, an intimate and playful exhibition by Ton of Holland and Dennis Koot.
Shown together for the first time, the complete collection TEN & DON wallpaper (Den & Ton) collection brings bedroom fantasies to the wall-featuring sweaty cowboys, wet sailors, and tough construction workers. These designs explore desire with humor and bold visual language.All drawn together by the two hands of both guys.Winner of a European Design Award During Pride Week, Ton will sleep overnight in the gallery, in a bed dressed in matching TEN & DON bedding. Visitors are invited to stop by after dark and shine a light inside-Ton will sleep right through it, even with the bed in the middle of the gallery. The whole gallery wil be changed in a boys bedroom.
In the second room, Ton presents large-scale erotic embroidery-“kinky and sexy symbolism, made with the needles that do not always hurt.” These works combine subcultural references with a poetic, visually tempting style that balances melancholy and humor.
Ton of Holland is a visual artist who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. He works across disciplines-fine art, interior, fashion, and graphic design-often bringing together 2D and 3D ideas. His practice is rooted in cross-fertilization: combining seemingly unusual elements into layered visual languages. His subjects are often melancholic and shaped by subcultures, presented in a poetic and humorous way. Dennis Koot is a graphic designer and also graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, he is based in the Netherlands. With over 20 years of experience, he works across a broad visual spectrum, combining versatility with a clear and playful approach. His work is guided by perspective, content, color, and aesthetics, and is shaped by both freelance art and large-scale commissions across the cultural, commercial, and public sectors.
Together, their collaboration as TEN & DON ( 2005 ) brings two visual practices into one shared space-celebrating intimacy, queerness, and visual storytelling.

Rabin Huissen is a conceptual artist based in Rotterdam, known for his distinctive acid blueprints that explore the relationship between body, emotion, and abstraction.
Rooted in a strong conceptual foundation, Huissen’s work is both deeply personal and tactile. Every element of his pieces is crafted by hand, making each artwork a unique synthesis of thought, form, and physicality. His practice reveals inner emotions and bodily responses-not through direct representation, but through layered abstraction.
In this exhibition, Huissen invites viewers to engage with the body not just as a subject, but as a medium for self-reflection. His use of color and composition is striking and intentional, encouraging us to reconnect with our physical presence and explore the hidden dimensions of our natural selves.
These works don’t simply aim to please the eye-they ask us to feel, to reflect, and to uncover meanings beneath the surface.

Gallery MAI Amsterdam is pleased to present Heavy Pictorial – 8 Illustrators from NRC, a dynamic group exhibition showcasing original cartoons, new paintings, and personal works by eight visual artists known for their contributions to the Dutch newspaper NRC.
The exhibition features over 200 pieces, revealing the artists’ talents beyond editorial illustration. Highlights include original works by Kamagurka, Jean-Marc van Tol (Fokke & Sukke), and Paulien Cornelisse, who makes her visual art debut with New Yorker–style cartoons, drawings, and handmade ceramics.
Also on view are striking ink drawings by Eliane Gerrits, colorful linocuts by Olivia Ettema, vivid paintings by Annabel Keijzer, and new drawings and photo comics by Ellen de Bruin.
Curated by Paul Steenhuis, former head of NRC’s art editorial team, the exhibition celebrates playfulness, lightness, and the freedom of artistic imagination.

Ballam, a Johannesburg native with a Fine Art Degree in photography, has spent his career exploring the diverse cultures and landscapes of Africa. His work transcends traditional photography, transforming powerful visuals into Fine Art pieces.
The Cattle of Kings focuses on the Mandari people of South Sudan and their Ankole-Watusi cattle, an integral part of their social and cultural identity. Through evocative imagery, Ballam captures the deep connection between the people, their livestock and their landscape, offering a strong visual narrative of heritage and resilience.

UNISECS duo expo
All the way back in 1996 they met as college friends at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Today, they combine their strengths in their exhibition at Gallery MAI. The powerful duo exposition of Martyn F. Overweel and Dennis Koot showcases the merge of Koot's graphic screen-prints and Overweel's illustrations. Important reasons for the personal and artistic match between the artists are their common interests like sex, absurdity, Britpop and gossip. High-profile subjects that resonate by the means of neon colors and sharp sense of humor.
NEURO-DISNIE
While traditional comics emphasize bold, clean lines, “expressive comic art is characterized by … energetic surfaces that collectively form the image.” Van Dijk’s approach explores how far one can push this technique while still retaining a level of recognizability—and this has become the core of his recent work. His latest work you can check in Gallery MAI Amsterdam, curated bij Ton van Holland who took the initiative for this exhibition called ‘NEURO-DISNIE’.

MEDICAL BODY JEWELS
After the successful exhibition ES GEHT AUCH OHNE, with drawings about Berlin's queer nightlife, The Medical Body Jewels exhibition will come to Gallery MAI at Geldersekade 30, especially for Pride Amsterdam in 2024. A shameless exhibition that is about the inside and the outside of the human body, about its beauty but also about illness, infirmities, decay and other intimate matters. External body decorations such as necklaces, rings, bracelets, piercings and gemstones, including diamonds. But also inside the body; like implants and prosthetics. The basis is vintage photography of the sensual male body. Through painting, photo collage and embroidery, an extremely aesthetic image is brutally created, especially of physical defects that we often prefer not to discuss. The uniform dimensions of the 30 paintings in four medical background colours enhance this image.
Gallery MAI Amsterdam has the honor to present the first solo exhibition of street photographer Stephen Hodes: "Singled Out." In this exhibition, the individual in the crowd is highlighted in Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Tokyo. Hodes' work offers a unique perspective on urban life, showcasing the vulnerability and diversity of the individual. From December 15th to May 4th, 2024, you can visit this exhibition.
